Faster, simpler dictionary search

One of the things that first drew me to FireFox a few years ago was its integrated search box. Being able to search Google or Yahoo without actually going to the page was a huge improvement, and has probably saved me hundreds of hours over the years. Now we’ve brought a little of that functionality to the ChinesePod Dictionary!

Search plugin installation screenshotIf you use FireFox and you go to any page in the ChinesePod Dictionary, you can install the search plugin. Just click on the down arrow to the left of the search box and select Add “ChinesePod Dictionary” (see the screenshot to the left). This will immediately add the option to search our dictionary to your in-browser search box.

Combined with the “related lessons” list provided for any word that we’ve used in lessons in the past, finding a ChinesePod lesson about a topic you’re interested in has never been faster. Thanks to our very own AuntySue for the suggestion!

That’s great, JohnB, but I don’t see an arrow next to “search”…perhaps because I use a Mac?

Azerdocmom, I’m using a Mac as well, and I DO get the arrow when I’m actually at the dictionary page - not when I’m in other ChinesePod places.

I’m not sure how techie you are, but if you’re using Safari, a program called AcidSearch lets you change search engines within Safari. It’s actually more convenient than the same function within Firefox, once you get it set up (and if I managed it, it can’t be that complicated) - I’ve been using it to seach the ChinesePod dictionary pretty much since the dictionary first came out.

On the other hand, if you’re using Safari, you can’t get the traditional plug-in (unless anyone knows how to adapt that for Safari? Please?).

Slightly off-topic: I really hope audio for the word itself can be added to the dictionary, not just audio for the sentences.

You forgot to mention that it also works in Internet Explorer 7!

AZERDocMom, I’m not sure why you don’t have an arrow next to the search box in FireFox. I’m looking at the page on my Mac right now, and it shows up. The arrow should be between the icon for your currently selected search engine (probably Google) and the search box itself.

    Richard,

Indeed, I did! Apologies for the oversight!

I am using Firefox with the Aluminium Kai theme which does not have an arrow, I guess the creator decided it was superfluous to requirements. Just click on the Google icon in the search bar and the drop down list shown above should appear.

I found the arrow via Phil’s suggestion (thnx Phil!) and have added the plugin to FF search :)

Thx for the info; will try AcidSearch when I have a minute :)

Another option for Mac users is to just add it to your bookmark bar (located just under the URL address box).

    Cheers!

This dictionary is great. By the way there is no translation for the 12 kuai pen on the entry for er.
    The lab tests are fun.

What a wonderful dictionary. dict.cn was the previous dictionary of choice but it only has audio for the English sentences.
    Thank you 非常感谢!
Now there is only one more function I would like to see added. A speed control so the sentences could be practiced slowly at first then a little faster until I could fluently say them at normal speed. (as I can do using Amazing Slow Downer software http://www.ronimusic.com/).

    David

    Nice! Very Nice! 非常非常好!
My only request now is for you to add a speed control feature so we can listen and repeat the sample sentence slowly, then more quickly, until we can speak at “normal” speed.
I use Amazing Slow Downer http://www.ronimusic.com/ and wonder/hope if you can somehow add this type of function to the dictionary.

    Yours,
    David
