Community Building

July 6th, 2007

At Praxis Language, we realize that language learning is a social phenomenon, but when we look across the Internet there is a distinct lack of communities for most language learners. We’d like to help fill this gap by creating forums (much like our ChinesePod forum) for students of other languages.

This is where you come in! We’re looking for forum moderators to help us build these communities. We are looking for people who are passionate about language learning, who know and love the ChinesePod/SpanishSense approach to language instruction, and (preferably) that have prior experience running a forum and/or blogging. You don’t have to be a native speaker of the language in question – Bazza, our incomparable ChinesePod forum guru, isn’t a native Chinese speaker – but you must be passionate (which Bazza and our other tireless forum moderators have in spades).

In return, we’re offering a free Praxis Pass for as long as you are working with us, and all the support that the fine folks at Praxis can muster (that’s a lot of support!). If you’re interested, please contact me directly at john.biesnecker@praxislanguage.com with the language you’re interested in working with us on, and as much information as possible regarding which language you would like to moderate, why you want to do this and how you meet our requirements.

Interesting seeing what in the pipe.

So, you’re saying that Praxis is going to offer Forum-like sites for languages they aren’t even addressing with podcasts? Outstanding, but puzzling. What’s in it for you guys to provide such a resource?

If I understand this correctly, the people who have already donated so much quality time (without getting nearly enough recognition) writing the CPOD foreign language blogs should probably get first crack at this. Due to my own interests I tend to follow Joachim & Anne’s German blog along with Antonio’s Spanish blog, but I look in on all of’em and am always impressed. Have you considered approaching them to collapse their blogs into full-blown forums?

    I wish I was a native Chinese speaker. ;)

    FuDaWei,

Right, we’re offering forums for languages that we don’t have podcasts for. I’d be pretty happy if our current non-English blog authors would be interested in administrating a forum for their language, though often it seems that native speakers of a language aren’t the best for running a discussion of learning that language — they’re experience with it is just so different than a learner’s.

    Everyone else,

We’re still looking! If you’re interested, please don’t hesitate to e-mail!

interesting idea, other industries might provide similar services to other target audiences, patient associations, medical societies…
on a related subject, it seems that the flow of comments on this blogs has been slowing down recently, is it because a lot of discussion has moved back to the lesson and user conversations as opposed to CPo’s, or is it a reflection on the choice of topics?
I also wonder about other language versions of this blog, the only one I (very) occasionaly look at is the French blog where there’s hardly any comment posted, must be really frustrating for the host. Are things different in the other blogs?

goulnik: ” … it seems that the flow of comments on this blogs has been slowing down recently, … ”

I think “mobile” week was a bit of a soporific for those of us who don’t use’em.

  6. Bazza 白锐 Says:

The Cpod forum has become very quiet recently.

  7. Frank Says:

Bazza, can you define “recently?” I noticed a drastic drop in the comments on the Newbie blog when we went to V3 and the link dropped off the main page.

  8. James Theron Says:

Well, the community sure took a big hit in the aftermath of the V3 transition. Perhaps the community will rebound in the coming weeks. I for sure don’t have much to add to the week’s “going mobile” theme.

Although I still follow this blog, the forum and Frank’s blog, the extra site has certainly dropped off my radar.

We’re also offering AdSense revenue for the forum admin. It will be the admin’s responsibility to provide us with their AdSense code (meaning they will have to set up an account with Google) and will get the revenues from ad clicks on their forum.

Funny, I sent in an email to show my interest and I totally misread the post. I did not pick up on the idea that the forums in question will be for languages other than Chinese or Spanish. Now that I checked over the post again I can see how this is an easy mistake to make. That makes my email somewhat off… whoops!
