ChinesePod on NBC Nightly News

May 13th, 2007

We had visitors on Friday. The NBC Nightly News crew came over to the factory and spent most of the day with us.  It looks like they may run two stories. One is how ChinesePod reflects the growing interest in Mandarin around the world. The second is  for CNBC and looks at the ChinesePod business-model. Both should run within the next 3 weeks.

These guys are smooth operators. Anchor Mark Mullen was impressive. I found him approachable, open, and genuinely interested to what we had to say. (This contrasts with some experiences I’ve had in the past with big media.) Here’s an interesting article he wrote on China some months ago.

I’ll keep you posted.

Ken, I’ve noticed quite a few Asian human interest stories in the news lately; most often centering on China. CNN did three consecutive stories this morning (including a rather disturbing one about the popularity of blepharoplastic surgery to obtain “western” eyelids). Mostly, they’ve been upbeat and positive. The Olympics are still a long way away, so I’m curious what’s behind it.

One thing’s for sure … as the Olympics draw near, I suspect you’ll be buried in website hits and new members. Good thing you’re shaking V3 out now, eh?

Ken, when the time comes for this segment to be shown on NBC, would you lets us know on a discussion link. I am sure a lot of us really want to see this story.

  5. 敦禮 Says:

    Please

  6. Ken Carroll Says:

    FDW,
I think we will see more interest in China and Chinese as we approach the Olympics. It’s becoming clear here that western coverage will not all be positive, so it will be interesting to see how this pans out.

We had to get V3 rolled out for number of reasons, but most of all because we believe it’s better. I guess it does make sense in the light of the Olympics. My guess is that interest in Mandarin will peak after the Olympics, not before.

    敦禮,
We’ll definitely let you know when we hear anything.

Thanks Ken. Cpod on NBC Nightly News is big. You all must be very excited. Congrads!

The topic of the spread of Mandarin has also permeated the Asian pop music scene with S.H.E.’s new CD, “Play.” The single off the CD is 中國話, which seems to have caused a bit of controversy back in their native Taiwan.
