With something of this scale, I guess there are bound to be bugs in the new system. It would help if you ChinesePod learners could post any bugs you find here. That’d be a systematic way to deal with them.
We’re not going away. The staff are here over the weekend, too. Let’s get this thing done. Your assitance would be really, really welcome.

OK, spotted another one:
Some of the shows obviously got assigned to the wrong discussions. For example Advanced 46 - 混血儿, the discussion seems to come from a Elementry show…
The Advanced and UI shows do not have Expansion and Dialogue yet, but I think that is not a bug but part of the switching process.
Old Advanced shows gone forever, e.g. the one on teas or on the food systems?

Great work with the new site! I have a few comments/bugs?:
Lessons:
- Dialog:
— Will the old lessons not have dialogue online, only in PDF? (I have only checked a number of old Newbie lessons but this seems to be missing from all of them).
- Vocabulary:
— Same thing here, will old lessons have this back?
- Expansion:
— Same thing here, will old lessons have this back?
- Exercises:
— Could incorrect answers somehow be marked on Show score
— Reset shown score on Next/Reset.
— With a 10/10 result the “10/10″-string isn’t 100% visible

I just mailed this issue to your e-mail address as well but my account shows up as premium on the my account page ONLY. This tells me that my Paypal payment has come through fine.
But on ANY OTHER PAGE BUT the my account page, my account shows up as free, and I can thus not access any of the basic or premium review materials and I can’t access my schedule, or the grammar and pronunciation sections for that matter.
Since my subscription ran out a few days ago and today was big introduction day (and since the weekend is coming up, which is when I do the bulk of my studying) I decided today would be a fine day to extend my subscription. Please, please, PLEASE tell me I can start exploring v3 by the end of the day

Henning,
We’re running into a few glitches displaying the data. They’re working on the comments right now. Expansion and Dialogue will be there soon for all lessons if it’s not there already.
The old Advanced shows are offline, but we are looking at ways of re-incorporating the content back into the site. For now, I guess they are your collector’s items…
David Hallgren,
All lessons will have Dialogue, Vocabulary, Expansion, Exercises. Sorry if they’re missing momentarily.
We will fix all those issues you bring up about the Exercises after we fix the higher priority bugs.
Thanks a lot for pointing these out, guys!

TRACKING - Can’t we assign some numbers to all these bugs. Although it will be a bit random, I’d suggest anyone commenting to just assign themselves a number, looking at previous comments. There will be some overlap if people post at the exact time, but I’m sure it would still help things. Cpod could then reply when such and such is fixed.
Or Cpod could do a daily summary and issue bug numbers and status. This will help us commenting also to see what’s already ‘on the books’. Just posting answers for each post will be a losing, pizza-delivery generating exercise.

I am enjoying exploring your new version. Very exciting!
Not sure if these would be called bugs or not:
-In my profile there does not yet seem to be an option to set my level as advanced.
-I just went to iTunes and my advanced feed is now downloading podcasts from the other levels. I figured out how to create a new feed and resubscribed in iTunes with that feed, however it hasn’t downloaded anything yet, maybe because there haven’t been new podcasts since the feed was created.
-Will there be a way to subscribe to “dialogue-only” audio files in iTunes? If it isn’t planned, I would recommend that as a feature to add. As an “advanced” subscriber, some of the lower level dialogues would still be useful to me if they were free of the other content.

Just started my first post V3 podcast update with iTunes. There doesn’t appear to be any track number related to the level anymore, neither in the podcast title nor the track no. For example the latest podcast is Newbie - Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes, track no 484. Previous podcast is Upper intermediate - Chinese Geography, track no 483. The new podcast information contains level in English but no number anymore. How are the tracks in each level to be sorted in iTunes? Alphabetically? Or am I missing something obvious?
The old podcast title was fine (at least for iTunes/iPod)

Old RSS feeds don’t work. Maybe they are not expected to, but that would be a bit of shame if the case (even if you don’t like the old urls some kind of rewrite rule could be implemented to keep backwards compatibility.
Perhaps I could trade in some advice on Web regression testing (automated with free tools) at sometime. It takes a little bit of setting up, but you shouldn’t really be expecting bugs at all (or rather the testing should pick them up). The days of using a browser and a pair of eyeballs to find your bugs should largely be gone.

0012. More of an invoncinience than a real “bug”:
Switching between Pinyin/Simplified/Traditional the “Complete the Sentences” Exercises resets all your answers, so you have to start all over. I often run into situations like “Was that odd little character really preonounced xi3 or was it xi2?”. In the old exercises that was not really a problem, as you had to position both Pinyin and characterö.

I like the fact that all of the characters in the dialogs now have mouse-overs that work (at least for the few I have tried).
However, there does appear to be font problems, in that some of the characters are nice and bold, while some of them have a washed-out appearance in comparison. I am not sure if that is because of the fonts I have installed or because the code generating the HTML etc is selecting the wrong fonts.

I’ve noticed a few link errors in the process which I’m reporting to bugs@ many of them under Media (which I hardly ever look at but just for completion). Aside from the bugs a certain level of discomfort is to be expected, and some fine tuning is in order, but I don’t think it’s realistic to expect or event want to switch back to v2. Lots of good stuff there in V3.

There seems to be a slight problem with the study schedule.
If you have a long list of bookmarked lessons and you scroll down to the bottom of the list to get a lesson, with the calendar disappearing off the top of the screen. Then try to drag the lesson back up to the calendar, the screen doesn’t scroll back up whilst a lesson is “picked up”.
However it is possible to use the PgUp key whilst dragging to get back to the calendar.
This may just be a Firefox issue.

Then I tried clicking on the “expand” tab just to check it out. I got a message saying I’d have to upgrade my subscription. Here’s one I don’t think has been mentioned yet. Previously in V2, I had bookmarked lessons for my lesson list, and then as I finished them, I would change them to archived. The latest lesson(The Breakup)is working fine but the previous lesson are not. As F1B1 kindly explained to me on the forum, when it tries to save as HTML Document, if you click on the scroll ‘v’ symbol it allows you to save as ‘All Types’. You then need to specify what program you need to open the download with. I chose Windows Media Player which works fine but I can’t get it to play in my iPod. 0028 Theme pictures for each lesson are not displayed: on this point I have to say the theme pictures that were there on the previous website looked really good, and not having them is quite annoying, are there plans to return them?
I’m just a new user and just got used to the v.2 Finding the whole navigation of the v.3 a big problem getting used to and not happy
Also for review purposes I find the the PDFs very useful: is there any way of downloading a group (eg intermediate) of PDFs without going to each lesson individually?
And, how can i view say, all lessons published in the last month, in date order as per the previous website?

BUG Swatting - If I might suggest a little more bureaucracy or efficiency depending on how you look at it. Depending on what works best on your end, either an Excel spreadsheet, an Access database, or a bug-management system, but something needs to act as a communication tool and clearinghouse.
A point person (various people can roll thru the role) works with the collection of bugs as they come in and as they get resolved. For example, every day the team gathers and goes thru the list, the point-person makes the updates to the database/tool. New bugs are suggested, and people can note whether they think it’s a net-new bug or an existing bug. The point-person can also cull thru the various comment threads, blog comments, and emails to identify net-new bugs. Each net-new bug is given a priority level based on urgency and level of effort. The programmers work thru them.
I realize that programmers will just want to work on the bugs and not come to this type of meeting, but this is mostly about communication, and it is very important to have this tool to set priorities and communicate out to the BigBrain.
Then a report out is given on fixed bugs and when the fixes will roll out. This latter part is something you can publish in the V3 issues, or blog or where ever you think is the best communication point. The bug list itself could also be published of course.
If you have any highly-paid consultants, they would color code everything. 开玩笑
I would also set up the same tool/routing/method to collect all the questions about various V3 features. Although it’s great that we’ve been getting some specific and personal responses from Ken, Steve, John, I think many are being left unaddressed. Routing the responses into a V3 FAQ-type page will help everyone get to V3 luv’n it, badabapa. IMHO

A minor problem, not sure if it qualifies as a bug: in the text versions of the dialogs, all the pinyin is lower case, unlike on the PDF where the first word of a sentence is capitalized. One of those things that just looks ugly.
Incidentally, what’s with all the different kinds of commas? Has this been explained somewhere?

Just found out that there are HTML-only-versions of the dialogues available now (not yet for all lessons, though). That is what I need - I gave up using the PDFs with the mobile device, because the mobile Acrobat was increadibly unstable, slow, and user-unfriendly. Besides I regard HTML much more comfortable to work with on an ordinary notebook also.
I only found that feature by chance, though - link is hidden in the footer of the PDF. Ideally the HTML-version-link would be right under the PDF one (which has been moved to where it belongs now, thank you, CPod team!).

That’s fascinating. They are evidently keeping it low-key for the moment, I guess.
If they are serious about offering an “text” version (actually an .html version) they really-really-REALLY ought to talk to moderator Carl over at the CPOD Forum. A little while back, on the CPOD Forum we were having a somewhat heated discussion about how .pdf files should be presented.
One of the moderators, Carl, stepped in with his typical Solomonesque wisdom and produced a simple proof-of-concept that dazzled us all into silence. It was a very simple and elegant .html version with embedded CSS. His off-the-cuff example allowed you to display the same data SIX DIFFERENT WAYS. It was brilliant.
CHECK IT OUT
Aunty Sue even tossed in a version (no longer online, evidently) that was well-received. If I recall, she colour-coded entries.
The CPOD tech team should take note.

A bug? Or am I just using the RSS feeds wrong?
When I copy the feed icon into my RSS feed (using a Mac, with NetNewsWireLite), it DOES work for the blog and for individual lesson comments. However, when I’m in my “Connect” page, the different feed icons do NOT work: I drag and drop to the RSS reader, and they copy in as “Untitled source” with “(No items).”
Mind you, given what’s going on in lessons like “The Olympics” (I’d give you the number but now there isn’t one!), maybe an “All Conversations” feed would no longer be a good idea.
Oh, and as others like Marc have indicated, using an RSS reader to keep track of the lessons DOES restore some of the functionality of the “recent podcasts” list of V2. But I still think (beating an old drum, I know, but I really think this is important) that listing the past week’s podcasts on our home page (is that what it’s called?) would be good. Two weeks ago, how could you tell someone the best way to check the most recent podcasts? “Well, go to the main page.” Now? “Oh, well, first register. Then set up your feed. Oh, you’ll need an RSS reader. Uh.. what’s an RSS reader? Well, it’s… uh…” RSS is a great tool but MANY casual internet users have no idea what it is, and to be honest they shouldn’t have to care.
Anyway, please confirm if I’m using the RSS icon properly. Thanks!

BUG SPRAY - It’s been an amazing week. Personally I insulted (by accident…’kinda) two people in Chinese this week. I have learned to say ’sorry’ profusely. 非常对不起. (Fei chang dui bu qi! I’m really sorry) Talk about in-context communicative learning. Sometimes reading books IS easier.
How’s V3 and Cpod doing? Has the bug list helped, do you still want Cpodders to contribute? Over the week, what was fixed, what’s slated for Monday? Of the 50 plus identified bugs, where’we at?
If timings bad for a report out today, or you’d just like bugs to continue to be noted here, let us know. At 107 plus comments, it’s time to update or close the thread.
Cpod 你们怎么样啊? 今天方便不方便,能不能给大家一件Bug Status 通知? 多谢!

Follow-up on RSS icons and links: those icons on my “Connect” page now DO drag and drop (you guys must have been so busy this week!), but the RSS feed they create is just the standard lesson list, not a list of the relevant postings. I’m assuming the “Your Conversations” feed should create a listing of all postings in, well, my conversations. Is that correct? Or are all the RSS icons for the same thing, a list of all the lessons?
By the way, thanks very much for sorting out the log-in cookies (or whatever they’re called). It’s very nice that the “Remember my name and password” seems to be working and I don’t need to log in all the time anymore. (Until this week I always assumed that was something my browser was doing.) And also for the first time, this traditional-character student is having fun with the exercises.

Bug 0123:
My concern is that the new site is no fun.
It doesn’t feel Chinese at all.
It doesn’t encourage me to linger and discover new things. The new look is so spare.
I used to look forward to a visit to the site as an immersion.
It doesn’t feel like Mandarin on My Terms. It feels like Generic Language Learning on the terms and conditions of Praxis Language Service, Mining, and Food Additives, Incorporated. “Please state the name of the language, mining technique, or foodstuff you wish to acquire.”
Also, could you please add a simple list to the site: V2 MP3 file names and their new V3 counterparts? Thanks.
Looking forward to smooth sailing at Chinesepod in the future.
BTW, everyone really does value the work that goes into this great service.

I am using iTunes to download podcasts and pdf’s and have noticed that several of the new “my feed” podcasts now have two associated pdf’s. The pdf title (in iTunes) does not change but the file name has changed from e.g. “quiet for the baby.pdf” to “quiet for the baby 1.pdf”. I assume that this is due to an update or correction to the pdf?
Is it possible for the iTunes title to be updated at the same time so deletion of superceded pdf’s can be done directly from iTunes?
